Spring is the ideal time to rescue a house from the ravages of winter and prepare for the summer sun. Here are some home maintenance tips that will keep your home at its best.
EXTERIOR
- Spring is a perfect time for planting fences and the home exterior to protect them from summer heat and sun. Once completely dry, wood decks should be sealed annually.
- Roofing shingles can become brittle in winter. Inspect the roof (or have a professional inspect it) for loose or curling shingles.
- Professional air conditioning maintenance is usually less expensive before the summer heat hits. Repairs required during the summer may be delayed due to excessive demand for service. Air conditioning filters should be cleaned or changed ever spring.
- Firewood should be moved at least 30 feet from a home to guard against termites, which return during the hot summer months.
- Gutters and downspouts should be cleaned.
INTERIOR
- Computers, lamps and TV sets, especially heat-intensive plasma screens, should be positioned away from thermostats. Heat from the appliances can trigger unnecessary cooling.
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries should be changed at least once a year.
- Don't Forget: The time-honored tradition of spring cleaning. An uncluttered, clean house is safer, and easier on allergies.
- Emergency supply and first-aid kits should be replenished. Visit www.redcross.org for more information.
