For most people, their home is their most valuable asset.  That's why it's vital that you choose right homeowners to protect your property and possessions.  Here are a few facts to help you make smart (and cost-effective!) decisions:

Although most standard policies cover damage to your home by natural disasters like fire, hail, lightning and wind, you'll need a separate policy to cover flood or earthquake damage.

Always document the true replacement value of your home and possessions by making a detailed video or photo inventory of everything you own and storing it securely off-site.

Before renewing you policy, make sure any home improvements or large purchases (including jewelry and electronics are fully covered.

To save money, ask about discounts.  For instance, adding a home security system can reduce your premium by 5% to 20%.  Some insurers offer up to a 20% discount if you're over 50 and/or retired.

Most companies also offer significant discounts if you carry your home, automobile and/or business insurance with them.

Before you select an insurance carrier, check out the company's financial stability and claim practices, compare coverage and request at least three price quotes.   Choose wisely to protect your most valuable asset.
